Love and Healthcare: Special Enrollment after Marriage or Divorce

April 19, 2024

A change in your marital status is a qualifying life event, or a big change, that may make you eligible for a special enrollment period. This might also change your tax credit amount as well. Tax credits are based on your income and how many people are in your family.

A recent marriage or divorce brings about the need to add or take a person off of your coverage. Just as with all qualifying life events, you need to report this change within 60 days of the event.

Some documents will be needed when you are reporting your marriage or divorce such as marriage certificate or divorce decree, and proof of prior coverage for one person. After those have been provided, you can make changes to your coverage, or select and enroll in a plan.
